Epilobium angustifolium
WILLOWHERB (FIREWEED)
The cosmetic and therapeutic properties of Epilobium angustifolium have received solid scientific validation and are explainable mainly by the unusual chemistry of the plant.
Epilobium angustifolium is commonly known as Fireweed, Willowherb, Rosebay Willowherb, French-Willow or Great Willowherb.
Native to North America, Europe and Asia, Epilobium angustifolium is a member of the Evening Primrose (onagraceae) plant family. It is a perennial that thrives where surrounding vegetation is dead, especially if an area has been scarred by fire.
In the United States, Epilobium angustifolium is found growing in open, cleared landscapes, where it creates a delightful flowering ocean of brilliant purple.
It is considered an endangered species in the states of Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee.
Rich in natural bioactive phenolic compounds, tannins and flavonoids, vitamin C, pro-vitamin A, as well as a powerful anti-inflammatory known as "oenothein B", the chemical constituents of Epilobium angustifolium all contribute to its soothing, calming, anti-inflammatory effect on skin.
Herbal remedies made from Epilobium angustifolium were once popular with Native Americans and early settlers for healing skin afflictions and treating gastro-intestinal upsets.
Young shoots were combined with other mixed greens and eaten like a vegetable and a tea from the herb is still occasionally consumed.
