A precious 'Jewel of Aromatherapy', Neroli is one of the richest, most exquisite and most expensive essential oils in the world. It's namesake is credited to a princess of Nerola in Italy, who delighted in wearing the oil as a perfume.
Neroli is associated with innocence and purity and in the 18th century the essential oil, which is responsible for the wonderful scent of the orange flower, was used as a primary ingredient in the first Eau de Cologne.
Neroli essential oil is obtained by steam distilling the flower blossoms of the bergamot (Citrus aurantium var amara, syn. Citrus bigardia) tree. It takes one ton of flowers to produce just one kilogram of oil - hence it's expensiveness.
