Helianthus annuus
SUNFLOWER
The Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a tall, stately ancient native-American plant of the asteracea (prev. compositae) family.
The large yellow flowers of many of the cultivars in this herb species follow the sun all day as it moves across the sky, hence its given name.
The seeds of the Sunflower yield a lightly textured, oleic acid-rich emollient oil, with large amounts of Vitamins A, D, and E, lecithin and unsaturated fatty acids, making it perfect for eye care and delicate skin care.
The seeds also contain helianol (a component of triterpene alcohols present in the flowers), which has potent anti-inflammatory effect on the skin.
With its flowers usually very high in the air, there is little chance of soil borne fungus or bug problems on the sunflower crop, which in turn means less inclination for even non-organic growers to require the use of poisons during this plant's cultivation.
Sunflower seed (Helianthus annuus) oil is one of several plant-derived emollients that mimic the lipid, or fat, content of the skin. This delicately textured oil helps stabilize and maintain the structure of the skin's complex inter-cellular matrix, preventing moisture loss and cell damage, and promoting skin with a soft, smooth, healthy appearance.
