Borago officinalis
BORAGE
Mineral-rich Borage is a beautiful annual herb with leaves that have a cucumber-like scent, and pretty bright blue flowers late spring through early fall.
In the first century AD, Borage was thought to alleviate sadness and melancholy and used as a medicine to confer happiness and courage onto its user.
Although it is not known how effective this traditional remedy was as an anti-depressant, the seeds of Borage do contain 20% Gamma-Linoleic Acid and are one of the richest known natural sources of this fatty acid, making it a wonderful skin nourisher.
In addition, borage contains tannins, giving it astringent qualitites, soothing mucilage and malic acid, a natural alpha-hydroxy fruit acid.
