Facial Toner Benefits
Many common skin problems can be prevented by using a quality facial toner.
Facial toners, however, are the most often skipped step out of any beauty routine. The fact is that a well-formulated facial toner will provide a more thorough cleansing experience than cleanser alone, helping to prevent congestion of the skin and pores which can otherwise lead to break-outs.
Additionally, a facial toner will provide the following benefits to your skin:
Cleaner Skin
A facial toner removes final traces of cleanser, make-up, surface impurities, excess oil and chemicals found in tap water.
Re-balances Acid Mantle
Facial toners help skin re-balance to its naturally acidic pH (acid mantle) after cleansing.
The acid mantle is an important part of the immune system and protects the body against bacteria and micro-organisms. It can be out of balance after using alkaline products (soap and many cleansers) or cosmetics, or due to poor nutrition and simple perspiration.
Reduces Oil Output
An alcohol-free toner is a must for oily skin types.
Contrary to popular choice, facial toners that contain alcohol can be highly detrimental to oily skin.
Some facial toners use alcohol as either an alternative preservative, or as the prime active ingredient.
In these roles, alcohol content in a facial toner can range anywhere from 12-15%+.
Alcohol dries and dehydrates the skin and causes skin cell damage. Skin dehydration and cell damage cause the body to over-compensate by producing more oil!
Oily+Dehydrated skin needs to be hydrated with an ALCOHOL-FREE facial toner!
Some people can have oily skin that also feels dehydrated, so even though they have excessive oil production, they also experience feelings of dryness.
This situation can be highly frustrating and required care is often misunderstood, leading to the wrong type of products or routine.
For example, one common mistake of the oily+dehydrated skin type is to apply a moisturizer that is far too rich or nourishing for oily skin. This leads to more oil, shine and skin that feels impure, and can create an urge to go back over the cleanse->moisture routine again, and again, and again throughout the day.
Oily+dehydrated skin needs to be cared for with products that do not contain alcohol.
Regular hydration of the skin with products that contain purified water, natural astringents and an adequate humectant, such as our Elderberry Clarifying Facial Toner, provide the best care for oily+dehydrated skin.
Smaller-Looking Pores
Although pores cannot be ?closed? by a toner, they can, when used as part of the cleansing process, help remove ingrained debris from pores while having an astringent (tightening) action on the skin tissue around the pore perimeter, effectively decreasing the appearance of pores.
Delivers Skin Care Actives
Facial toners can contain powerful biochemical actives, such as essential oils and botanical extracts, all that have a wonderfully rejuvenating effect on the skin's health and appearance.
For example, Elderberry Clarifying Facial Toner contains Rosewood essential oil, which is a natural antibacterial and can help to address acne and post-shave rash issues. Geranium Balancing Facial Toner contains Geranium, which is said to have a balancing effect on sebum production.
Other Facial Toner Benefits
In addition to the hydrating and refreshing action of facial toners that contain an effective humectant (water-attracting) ingredient, natural anti-inflammatory ingredients can be formulated into some facial toners to help soothe reactive skin conditions. For example, Alchemilla's Chamomile Soothing Facial Toner is a wonderful choice for sensitive skin.
Facial toner also aids and extends the application of other products to your skin. Toner-dampened skin can create a smoother application and will dilute the product to reduce the amount used.
