Due to over-harvesting, Indian sandalwood is under threat and appears on the World Conservation Union?s (IUCN) threatened species list. Consequently, Alchemilla does not use nor re-sell Sandalwood from this region.
Australian Sandalwood: Although it was once an over-exploited crop in serious decline in Australia, strictly enforced government regulations and increased commercial cultivation of Australian Sandalwood has enabled the needs of the worldwide natural products market to be met, while ensuring the species itself quickly regenerates and thrives.
The Australian Sandalwood industry is now well supported and sustained by both private landowners and specially licensed wild harvesters, who are required to limit their harvest according to the conditions of their license, and re-plant everything they remove using specialized planting techniques that ensure the replacement crop's success.
