Epilobium angustifolium
ROSEBAY WILLOWHERB
Rosebay Willowherb is also commonly known as fireweed, willowherb, french-willow and great willowherb. It thrives where surrounding vegetation is dead, especially if an area has been scarred by fire. It's botanical name is Epilobium angustifolium.
Native to North America, Europe and Asia, Epilobium angustifolium is a member of the Evening Primrose (onagraceae) herb family. In the United States, it is found growing in open, cleared landscapes, where it's delightful flowering ocean of brilliant purple can startle a passerby. It is an endangered species in the states of Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee.
Epilobium angustifolium is rich in natural bioactive phenolic compounds, tannins and flavonoids, vitamin C, pro-vitamin A, as well as a powerful anti-infammatory component known as "oenothein B". Its chemical constituents all contribute to its soothing, calming, anti-inflammatory effect on skin.
An herbal remedy made from Epilobium angustifolium was once popular with Native Americans and early settlers for healing skin afflictions and treating gastro-intestinal upsets. Young shoots were also combined with other mixed greens and eaten like a vegetable and a tea from the herb is still occasionally consumed.
Although sometimes considered a weed, the cosmetic and therapeutic properties of Epilobium angustifolium have received solid scientific validation and are explainable mainly by the unusual chemistry of the plant.
